The Baker Program in Real Estate is excited to welcome Mathew Jalazo to this week’s Distinguished Speaker Series. Jalazo joined Urgo Hotels (Urgo) in 2006 as a Project Manager and Analyst and currently serves as the company’s Director of Development. In this role, he is responsible for deal sourcing, underwriting, conducting due diligence, investigating market feasibility, securing debt and equity financing, and overseeing the entitlement and design processes.

Urgo is a leader in the hospitality industry specializing in the development, ownership, and management of hotels and resorts across a wide variety of hotel brands and geographic regions. Locally in Ithaca, Urgo is in the process of developing the 159 room, 10-story Hotel Ithaca Marriott that is currently under construction at the east end of the Downtown Commons.

During his 8 years at Urgo, Jalazo has deployed over $200 million of capital on new construction and acquisition projects and has helped grow the company’s portfolio from 18 hotels to over 30 hotels today. Jalazo will share with the students some of the lessons he has learned during his real estate career and, hopefully, some of the challenges in developing the Hotel Ithaca Marriott.

Jalazo is a 2006 graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his BSBA from the Kenan-Flagler Business School. He currently lives in Baltimore with his wife and two daughters.
